Biography

Rob Marano graduated from the Albert Nerken Engineering School at The Cooper Union in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He worked for General Electric as part of their Edison Engineering technical development program. As the Internet started to take hold, he innovated the first Internet-enabled operations management systems for the US Government and data centers for Wall Street. As with many Cooper alumni, he entered the world entrepreneurship and worked to commercialize the technology built for Wall Street for the market in general; he built the US engineering teams and architected many products for Micromuse and RiverSoft, which together are now the Tivoli division of IBM. Following RiverSoft, Rob served as the director for emerging software technologies at PwC in London, where he advised venture capital firms and Fortune 100 companies on software, Internet, and mobile technology use. With that experience in Europe and AsiaPac, he returned to NYC to start several Internet ventures, most notably InDorse Technologies which solved document security for companies like Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Credit Suisse. On the heels of InDorse, Rob created The Hackerati as a premier web, Big Data, and Machine Learning consultancy with his entrepreneurship students at Cooper Union. Our Cooper alumni at Hackerati led innovative solutions at Huffington Post, Viacom, and Lockheed Martin. In fact, if you read Huffington Post or watch programs from Viacom on your mobile phone, you have experienced the Cooper Union / Hackerati experience! Following another Cooper Union-focused startup in renewable energy and next generation utility poles (Totem Power), Rob now serves as the Americas leader for IoT Solutions at Amazon’s subsidiary, AWS, where he is leading next generation, ML-based connected devices solutions for companies in the industrial, energy, telecoms, and finance sectors. Since 1996, Rob has been lecturing on computer science, electrical engineering, and entrepreneurship at Cooper Union, NYU , and NYIT. In closing, Rob has served in the Student Government while a student at Cooper Union from 1991-1993 and on the Alumni Council as a Representative and VP Faculty and Student Liaison (2007-2012), as well as a member of the Presidential Search Committee for current President Laura Sparks. He lives in Westchester, NY with two pre-teen children.
