Alumni Profile: Lois Dodd, A’48

Dodd-Lois-1Lois Dodd grew up in Montclair, NJ and studied art at The Cooper Union.  She lives in both New York City and in Maine.  She is well known for her paintings of New England landscapes, her urban landscapes, and for her paintings of everyday objects.  She maintains a studio on 2nd Street in Manhattan and another one in Lincolnville, Maine.

In 1952 she served as one of five founding members of the legendary Tanager Gallery in Manhattan. William King A’48 and Alex Katz A’49 were also co-founders.

She has influenced many painters, including Catherine Murphy, Sylvia Plimack-Mangold (A’59) and Josephine Halvorson, (A 2003).

She has taught “Outdoor Painting Workshops” in Sebasco Estates, Maine.

Her work is included in the collections of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Colby College Museum, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the Farnsworth Museum, the National Academy of Design, and the Chase Manhattan Bank.

In 1996, a traveling exhibition of her work called, “Lois Dodd: 25 Years of Painting,” was organized.  Some of its venues were the Trenton City Museum and the Montclair Museum in New Jersey.

In 2012 she had a retrospective show at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO. which was featured on Kansas City NPR.

In 2015 she had a solo exhibit, Lois Dodd: Rent Panel Paintings at Alexandre Gallery which included 34 of her works.

In 2022, she had a solo exhibit, Lois Dodd: Natural Order at the Hall Art Foundation in Reading, VT that featured 48 of her works.  All 48 can be seen on-line here.

In 2023, she has a solo exhibit, Lois Dodd: Natural Order at the Bruce Museum, in Greenwich, Conn that features 77 of her works.

Lois Dodd received the Cooper Union Presidential Citation in 1987, the Augustus St. Gaudens Medal in 2005, and she was inducted into The Cooper Union Hall of Fame in 2009.
